How to Avoid Nanny Scams
How to Avoid Nanny ScamsHow to Avoid Nanny ScamsOnline job postings for nannies are one of the more common targets for job scammers. The scammer will register as a family seeking a nanny, promising a terrific salary and great working conditions. For example, they will promise to pay $2500 a week for a part-time position. behauptung scammers will try to either take your money or your identity, or both. To avoid getting scammed, learn about the most common nanny scams, and discover safe ways to find legitimate nanny jobs. How Nanny Scams Work There are a couple of common nanny scams. Regardless of the type, the scam usually begins with a fake parent reaching out to you (via email or text) to offer you a job that seems too good to be true. One common scam is that he or she will send you your first payment, in the form of a fraudulent check or money order, before you even begin working for them. The person might say that the family is moving, and therefore wants to pay you in advance . After you deposit the check, he or she will ask you to forward some of the money to a third party, or he or she will come up with a reason that you need to return the money for example, they overpaid you, or they need to pay for bills, a childs tuition, etc. Often, it will be a very sad reason, like unexpected medical bills or other personal tragedy. You will ultimately have to pay your bank for the fraudulent check, and you will lose the money you sent back to the scammer. Another common scam targets nannies who want to work in foreign countries, but cannot get the appropriate visa. The scammer, posing as a family, will claim that they have a lawyer who can help get a visa, but the nanny has to send them money for the lawyer. Once the nanny sends the money, he or she never hear from the family again. These scams can also work the other way around. Some scammers claim they are nannies that live out of the country and need money to apply for a visa or need their first payment earl y (again, usually for a very heart-wrenching reason). The family will send money and never hear from the nanny again. Nanny Scam Warning Signs Nanny scams are common, but it is easy to look for red flags if you remain vigilant. Check out this list of scam warning signs Its too good to be true. Be cautious of nanny jobs that seem too good to be true, such as ones that offer an amazing salary for minimal work. There is no vorstellungsgesprch. Beware of families that hire you without interviewing you. After all, would a real family let someone take care of their children without looking into his or her background? The language is odd. One typo or two is normal, but if an email or text is filled with spelling and/or grammar errors, this is a sign that it is not an email from a real family. They ask you for money. The most important rule to remember is never, ever send or receive money from a family you have not met. No family would actually pay you money up front, and no family shou ld ask you for money either. Similarly, no nanny should ask you for money before working for you, and no nanny should send you money. Listen to your gut. If anything anything at all makes you feel unsure or uncomfortable about a job offer, dont respond. Your gut is really good at recognizing a scam or a bad situation. How to Report a Scam If you are in contact with someone about a nanny job and think you are being scammed, cut off all contact with that person. Do not respond to any emails or answer any texts or phone calls. Once you cut off all contact, you can report the scam in a couple of ways. Firstly, if you are using a childcare agency like Care.com or Sittercity.com, report the scam to the site. fruchtwein sites have a link to an email address or phone number you can contact to tell them about the scam. You can also report the scam to a broader organization, like the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The IC3 accepts any online crime complaints. If you have been sca mmed, you can also visit your local police station. Bring copies of any email or letter transactions you have had, and have all of the scammers contact information available. The police will not likely be able to get your money back, but the information is useful for them to have. How to Find a Good Nanny Job One way to avoid scams (or reduce your risk of scams) and find a good job as a nanny is to use a reputable agency. Keep in mind that an agency should never charge you, the nanny, to use the agency all fees should be paid for by the family. Check out sites like Care.com, Urbansitter.com, and Babysitters4hire.com, among others. If you are looking for international nanny jobs, work with an agency that can help you gather all required documentation, such as a work visa. You can also find local nanny jobs in the classifieds, both in your local newspaper and online. Also, make sure you interview with a family before accepting a job. Meeting with the family, including the childre n, is a great way to decide whether or not a job is a right fit for you.

Coping Skills for Anxious Job Seekers
Coping Skills for Anxious Job SeekersCoping Skills for Anxious Job SeekersJob searching can be stressful, even for the most confident person. It can be mora challenging if youre anxious and worried about the hiring process, as well as about when you will be hired for a new position. If youre unemployed, the stress can be compounded with concern about how long its going to take to find a new job, and how youre going to pay the bills until you line up a new position. There are many factors in a job hunt that can cause anxiety, but there are ways to reduce stress and take control. You might never consider job searching fun, but at least you might be able to turn it into a positive experience rather than a difficult one. The Reasons for Job Search Anxiety People are anxious for different reasons, said Dr. Janet Scarborough Civitelli, psychologist, career counselor, and founder of VocationVillage.com. It helps to identify the thoughts and situations that are causing the most distress, and address them one by one. Some of the most common reasons for job-search anxiety, and strategies for umgang them, include Getting overwhelmed by how big a project it seems to land a new job Strategy To conduct an effective job search, break the overall project into manageable tasks. Each one completed will bring you closer to the job offer that you seek. Disliking the feeling of uncertainty about how long the job search will take Strategy Shift the emphasis away from the outcome and focus on the part that you can control i.e. the specific actions you will take. Telling yourself scary stories (No one will want to hire me or There are no good jobs) Strategy Find inspiration by reading success stories about people who have overcome obstacles to land employment. You can also redirect your energy toward concrete steps that increase your odds of landing a job. Two of the best activities are meeting new people and developing new professional skills. Take Care of the Details First A bedrngnisher way to alleviate some of the stress involved in job hunting is to take care of everything that needs to be done in a timely manner. If youve been laid off, apply for unemployment. Know what will happen to your employee benefits when you move on. When you have a 401(k) to roll over, review your options for handling it. Once youve checked it off your list, its one less thing to worry about. Create a basic resume and cover letter that you can customize each time you apply for a job. Review your LinkedIn profile and give it a makeover if there is need. Line up some references who will attest to your skills and qualifications. Get Organized Your search will be less stressful if you organize it and treat it like a job. If youre out of work, consider it your full-time job. If youre employed, schedule part-time hours to spend job hunting. Choose one of these easy ways to organize your job search, and keep track of your applications, networking outreach, and the career event s youre planning to attend. When you have a plan in place, it will help minimize the anxiety because youll be keeping track of what youve done and what you need to do next. You wont have to think about the task until its time to handle it. Practice and Prepare Spend some time job hunting, even when youre happy in your current position and you dont have to. With this approach, youll keep your resume up-to-date, your interview skills polished, and your confidence level high. If you see an interesting job, apply for it. Its good practice, and it may be a better opportunity than you expected. Youll be less anxious if youre going after a role that isnt your dream job, and youll be mora prepared when that perfect position comes along. And you never know- that job you werent that excited about could be your next terrific career move. The more you practice, the more comfortable youll be during an interview. Knowing what type of position youre seeking, and being able to articulate why yo ure qualified for the role, will help you ace the interview. Practice responding to the most common interview questions employers ask, and have a few questions of your own ready. Spend time researching the company, so youre informed about the companys products, people, mission and objectives. The more you know, the easier it will be to have a conversation with the interviewer. Take time to try on what youre going to wear, and get it ready the evening before your interview. That will save you from stressing over last-minute attire decisions. Create an elevator pitch that describes who you are and what you have to offer. Practice saying it in front of a family member, make a video of yourself to see how you did, or say it in front of a mirror. The more comfortable you are talking about yourself, the more confident youll feel during the interview. Know What to Expect Dont expect to find a new job overnight, though that can happen. For most job seekers, its a process, not a one-shot deal. You might not get the first position you apply for, but that most likely means that it wasnt the job for you. There will be plenty of other positions to consider. Even though it sounds like it might create more anxiety, it can be helpful if you have a lot going on. When youre busy sending out resumes, networking, attending career events and interviewing, youll have less time to obsess about every little detail. Dont count on one single opportunity. The more jobs you are pursuing, the more chances youll have to make the best impression and get an offer. Dont stop applying until youve committed to a new job. Remember that its not just about the company hiring you. Its also about whether the employer is the best fit for the next step on your career ladder. Thats as important for you as it is for the company, and if you feel like its not the right job for you, you can politely decline if you get an offer. If its earlier in the process, another option is to withdraw your applicati on. Take a Break Thanks to smartphones and the internet, its almost too easy to stay connected. But, its vitally important not to spend every waking hour focused on how youre going to get hired for your next job. The more you think about it, the higher your anxiety level will be. Instead, stick to your schedule and take breaks. Exercise, yoga, reading a book, walking your dog, turning off your computer and ignoring your phone when youre not in job-hunting mode can help reduce anxiety. You will find a job. It may take longer than youd hope, but youll find something, said Erin Kennedy, president of Professional Resume Services. It sometimes takes companies time during the vetting and interviewing process. Patience isnt easy when you are out of a job, but perhaps go for a 30-minute walk every day, try yoga (you can do a class on YouTube or online for free), call a friend, or clean out the drawer/closet/room youve been meaning to get to. Feeling productive while unemployed really he lps. Get Support One of the best ways to reduce your anxiety is to talk with others. You may be surprised to learn that almost everyone you know has been in this position at one time or another. You can get some words of wisdom and stab und sttze if you share your anxiousness with a career support group, friends or family. If your anxiety is overwhelming, remember that youre not the first person who is having a difficult time. A career coach or counselor can help you focus on your goals, get your resume and cover letter in order, target your job search, and help you with coping skills for interview stress. If you need more help, your career counselor or primary care physician likely can provide a referral to a therapist who can assist. Consider it an Opportunity One of the best ways to look at a job search from a positive perspective is to consider your job search an opportunity to pursue the next stage of your career, rather than as an ordeal you have to struggle through. Y our career is about more than one opportunity, interview or company, said Jonathan Carter, organizer of Leap2HR, a LinkedIn group for new and transitioning HR professionals. So stop worrying about landing the right one, and just embrace the opportunity for change. Meet people. Explore different organizations. Look outside of the places youd expect to find your next role. Dont focus on changing your job. Focus on changing your life for the better- and the job will come.

This is the huge networking mistake you dont know youre making
This is the huge networking mistake you dont know youre makingThis is the huge networking mistake you dont know youre makingThere are a host of ways you can go wrong when writing geschftliches miteinander and networking emails, from horrible subject lines to forgetting to include attachments. But you could also be making another huge mistake - not making a request about the next steps. As the sender, its up to you to be clear about what you want the recipient to do, as Quartz at Work notes.Heres why you should include a requestHeather Piedmont, CEO and Founder of Heather Piedmont Media, illustrates how to include an action item in a networking email in a Levo post.Dont let it end at just an email that can be passed by give them something to do in response, Piedmont writes. Suggest a time and date to meet up again and do a face-to-face follow-up, or ask a simple question for them to answer. This will make sure your message isnt ignored, and shows you want to connect further. Sometimes (and even I have this moment)you hand over a business cardand wonder if it will even be worth the paper its made of. With an action item, you show that youre a profitable and positive connection with initiative.Heres what else you shouldnt do in networking emailsHere are some other mistakes youll want to avoidDont rambleOversharing by waxing poetic about everything thats happened in your careeris a surefire way to make the recipients eyes glaze over.So keep it brief and to the point. Make it clear that their time is valuable.Dont copy unnecessary recipients at the companyLooping everyone in isnt always a good thing.Anisa Purbasari Horton, ofFast Companys Leadership section, features advice from Peggy Duncan, productivity expert, author of Conquer Email Overload with Better Habits, Etiquette and Outlook, and founder of The Digital Breakthroughs Institute, in an article for the publication about the follow-up email.Duncan said, When sending an email, ask yourself who needs to receive the information youre sending, and only send it to those individuals. If this isnt clear, ask yourself the question, Would I pick this person to call about what Im about to email them? If the answer is no, Duncan said, Why are you emailing them about it?Dont fail to turn on the charmIts possible to kill two birds with one stone here.Heather R. Huhman, founder president of Come Recommended, writes on LinkedIn that you should feed their ego in a networking email.A great way to capture someones attention is to flatter them with your email,Huhman writes. For example, you can highlight one of their accomplishments that impressed you or something you admire about them. This is a great way to show youve done some research and that youre genuinely interested in building a relationship with the person.

5 Networking Lessons I Wish I Learned in High School
5 Networking Lessons I Wish I Learned in High School5 Networking Lessons I Wish I Learned in High SchoolMy high school reunion was the other week, and one thing surprised me. I realized how the social cliques of our past often translate to how we interact with our professional networks. Here are the lessons I wish Id known all along.I recently attended my high-school reunion. It was great to see old friends, but I was struck by how many people I never got to know in high school. For many, those formative years are tough ones, defined by insecurities and confusion. Kids often create their own social hierarchies in order to survive. Most teens arent mature enough to understand the nuances of networking effectively, and they miss opportunities to build certain relationships. Unfortunately, as many of us age, we abfahrt on to our high-school insecurities and fail to nurture a robust and lasting network of people to reach out to as we build our professional lives. Here are five suggestions for breaking out of the high-school mentality to achieve your professional goals and strengthen your professional network.1. Eat lunch at a different table each day.In high school, students tended to share their lunch hours with the same group of kids day in and day out. I often see adults in the corporate world do the same thing.Dont go to lunch with the same person every day. Expand your network by reaching out to others in your department or division. Spend time with people in peripheral departments with professional agendas that are different from yours. Lunch time is a great time to get to know someone on a more personal level. People who take the time to build strong personal relationships have stronger networks to reach out to when they need assistance.2. Touch the untouchables. When I was in high school, there were several cliques. It could be very hard to break into a clique if you werent part of their shared activity, such as sports or theater. Adults often think that certa in people on the corporate ladder are untouchable - that they cant approach a C-suite executive or a potential contact in a new industry. They assume the new contact wont give them the time of day. While some wont, others will. You wont know until you approach them.3. Stop thinking that everything is about you.High-school students often obsess about themselves and everything that is going on in their lives. Small defeats seem like major ones. And many teens are convinced that everyone is watching their every move and waiting for them to slip up. Sometimes we carry this me-centric way of thinking into our professional lives.Usually people arent paying nearly as much attention to you as you think they are. But they will pay attention to how you interact with them. So when you network, stop thinking about yourself and what you need, and start thinking about how you can help another person. Give to give, and if you get something in return, consider it gravy. Chances are good that if you position yourself as someone who tries to help others, the reciprocity will follow.4. Interact with people who are not just like you.In my high school, it was sometimes tough to interact with students in different grades. A juniorchefin generally didnt hang out with a freshman, and you rarely saw a sophomore dating a senior. Friendships across racial and ethnic lines occurred, but probably not as frequently as they could have. This phenomenon happens with adults all the time.People often limit their networks to contacts in the same job function, industry or professional level. Older professionals reach out to their younger colleagues with less frequency, and networks arent always as racially integrated as they should be. To improve the quality of your network, diversify. Be all inclusive, and reach out to people of all ages, professions and backgrounds.5. Have a life outside of high school. When I was a teen, most of my social life centered on high school. It wasnt until I was a seni or and got my first real job that I started interacting with people I didnt know from school. Most of them were high-school students as well, and most of them went to the same school, but I never would have met them if I didnt have this job. For various reasons, our paths just never would have crossed. And this part-time job was perhaps the richest experience of all my high-school years. It taught me that my life could be enriched by people outside my usual inner circle. Adults sometimes become enmeshed in the culture of their companies and forget that there is a whole world of professionals to tap into.If their position is downsized, they struggle because all their connections are with people in the company that just let them go. To better manage your career, find other communities that support your professional goals. Consider joining a professional association for your job function or industry to connect with others and build your network. What insecurities or bad habits are holdi ng you back from being a more effective networker? And what can you do to change your strategy moving forward?
